Artist statement: "The CMS detector has a powerful physical scale, intricate construction and variegated surface colours. These features give it a visual impact alongside its purely scientific purpose. To express the CMS detector's spatial and visual qualities, I decided to adapt the historical tradition and concept of the 'icon'. The category of 'icon' has expanded over the last seventy years. It used to refer to devotional objects but now includes secular images that have global reach. Even the simple stylised graphics that represent apps on people's mobile phones are today described as 'icons'.

In his silk-screen work often featuring celebrity portraits, Andy Warhol used serial imagery, colour variations, repetition and grids in a clever and humorous way to consider the power, impact and presence of popular twentieth century subjects alongside the symbolic, emotional and psychological resonance that previously belonged only to religious and political figures.

"I decided to create abstract images of the CMS detector, drawing on its symmetry, complex composition and colour contrasts. I used Warhol's silk-screen technique to make multiple prints with colour permutations to reimagine and express the detector as an icon--an elegant and shorthand visual symbol for a technical and scientific object of both technical power and aesthetic beauty."
