Employed members of the personnel are entitled to official leave, as well as to sick leave.
Applicable to: Associates, Students, Employed members of the personnel (staff members and fellows)
The CERN leave year runs from 1st October to 30 September of the following year.
2.5 days are credited to the "annual leave" account in EDH each month.
Annual leave may not be taken without the supervisor's prior approval. Members of the personnel must complete a Demande d'absence / Absence Request in EDH, indicating "Annual Leave".
A medical certificate (see the sample template for illness/accident certificate) must be provided for any absence of more than three consecutive days. A new medical certificate is required each month if the absence continues.
Only a scanned copy of the medical certificate must be sent by the member of the personnel to CMS secretariat.
Leave for family reasons
Employed members of the personnel are entitled to paid or unpaid leave for family reasons:
- adoption of a child
- family event (marriage, death of a close relative)
- illness of a close relative*
- parental leave
- compassionate leave

This type of leave is entered in EDH by Department Secretary.
All necessary documents should be provided to the CMS secretariat.
